WHERE WE WORK

Rooted in Communities
Connected Across Borders
Transforming Lives

Diar Foundation does not simply work in these countries. We work alongside communities to empower people, build local ownership, and create lasting transformation. Communities are leaders, decision-makers, producers, and owners of their future. Our role is to listen, strengthen capability, connect people to opportunity, and help progress continue beyond a single project.

Across East Africa, with a U.S. base

Select a country on the map. South Sudan, Uganda, and Kenya are the 2024–2025 programmatic countries. Sudan is where our story began. The United States is our organizational base, so it sits beside the map.

PROGRAMMATIC COUNTRY

South Sudan

South Sudan is a core Diar Foundation program country and the center of our long-term agricultural and community-development vision. Our work connects local food production, farmer capacity, livelihoods, youth opportunity, child protection, women’s participation, community partnerships, and resilience in a context shaped by conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and limited economic opportunity.

During 2024–2025, the South Sudan Will Never Starve Again initiative and a network of 21 farms provided the strongest place-based agricultural platform in Diar Foundation’s portfolio. The farms are envisioned as practical hubs for production, farmer learning, youth engagement, enterprise, food security, and community resilience.

Historical work in South Sudan and the former DRDA portfolio has included seed and tool distribution, farmer field schools, women’s farm schools, vegetable production, fishing kits, food-for-assets, youth livelihoods, child protection, peacebuilding, and community assets.

PROGRAMMATIC COUNTRY

Uganda

Uganda is a core Diar Foundation program country. Our work and development direction include women farmers, livelihoods, enterprise pathways, family well-being, child protection, agriculture, skills, and community-led economic development. Uganda also plays an important role in Diar Foundation’s wider East African learning, production, training, and cross-border development vision.

Community fish farm in Kenya

PROGRAMMATIC COUNTRY

Kenya

Kenya is a core Diar Foundation program country and an important part of our regional development model. Current work includes aquaculture, farmer organization, nutrition, livelihoods, entrepreneurship, and community economic development. In 2024–2025, Diar Foundation reported one fish-farm initiative involving more than 35 women, men, and youth in a community farmer group/network.

Kenya is also being developed as an East Africa regional coordination and sustainability hub supporting shared learning, training, partnerships, monitoring, resource development, and regional systems.

WHERE OUR STORY BEGAN

Sudan

Our story began in 2003 at Mayo IDP Camp in Khartoum, Sudan. Karak Miakol and a group of displaced women came together, and that grassroots movement became the Diar for Rehabilitation and Development Association (DRDA). Its earliest work was rooted in women’s and children’s rights, education, livelihoods, protection, agriculture, emergency support, and community recovery.

Sudan remains part of Diar Foundation’s wider regional engagement and partnership footprint. The 2024–2025 programmatic reach count is based on South Sudan, Uganda, and Kenya. Community forums and regional partnership work have also connected stakeholders in Sudan. Sudan is not included in that annual reach total.
